‘Never on Sunday’: Greece riots over shop openings end with tear gas, clashes

Two people have been injured as Greeks rioted over the opening of shops on Sunday. Hundreds of protesters gathered in Athens’ main shopping district, resulting in clashes with riot police who tried to disperse the protesters with tear gas.
Local media reports stated that some 300 retail employees participated in the riots. Unconfirmed social media reports stated that as many as 1,000 participated. During the tension, balls were thrown at shop windows and banners reading “Never on Sunday” were unfurled on Ermou St., in the northeast of the capital, shattering them.

Demonstrators shouted slogans and called on people not to shop. Many retailers conceded to the demands of protesters and shut.

The Weather Forecast for the Next Year Is Out — And It's Not Looking Good for Us

Forecasters are increasingly confident that an El Niño is looming ahead of us for 2014 — and this one could be quite a doozy.

Writes Slate's Eric Holthaus:

If current forecasts stay on track, El Niño might end up being the biggest global weather story of 2014.
The most commonly accepted definition of an El Niño is a persistent warming of the so-called "Niño3.4" region of the tropical Pacific Ocean south of Hawaii, lasting for at least five consecutive three-month "seasons." A recent reversal in the direction of the Pacific trade winds appears to have kicked off a warming trend during the last month or two. That was enough to prompt U.S. government forecasters to issue an El Niño watch last month.
Forecasters are increasingly confident in a particularly big El Niño this time around because, deep below the Pacific Ocean's surface, off-the-charts warm water is lurking:

Will an Old and Idiotic Habit Give Birth to a New Cold War?

Have a happy “Unsinkable Ship” that “sank” day, everybody! It’s coming in two days on 14 April. That will be the 102nd anniversary of of the sinking of RMS Titanic, the loss of which, in 1912, was later thought of as a portent of the great sinking of monarchies and nations to come two years later. Now it comes again in remembrance for this year of 2014, which happens to be the 100th anniversary of the start of the First World War.

Popular televangelist claims four blood moons are sign of ‘world-shaking event’

Four complete lunar eclipses will appear in the sky starting on April 15. Pastor John Hagee, of Texas’ Cornerstone Church, believes God is trying to communicate with humans through these celestial signs.

The heavens are putting on a celestial show next week — and one Christian pastor is convinced it’s a sign from God.
Bestselling author and televangelist Pastor John Hagee claims the four blood moons that will soon appear in the skies over America are evidence of a future “world-shaking event.”
The blood moons are part of a tetrad, a set of complete and consecutive lunar eclipses that will begin on April 15 and continue in roughly six-month intervals until October 2015.
According to NASA, seeing four complete lunar eclipses in a row is very rare. The skies were tetrad-free from 1600 to 1900. But in the 21st century, there will be many.
What’s even stranger is that Americans have a front row seat.
"The most unique thing about the 2014-2015 tetrad is that all of them are visible for all or parts of the USA," NASA eclipse expert Fred Espenak told CNN.
Hagee, founder of Texas’ Cornerstone Church, thinks this is no coincidence. For him, it's a sign of the end times.

  • Franc Cano, 27, and Steven Dean Gordon, 45, were arrested on Friday in Anaheim
  • Santa Ana and Anaheim authorities launched a joint investigation on March 14 after Jarrae Estepp's body was found on a conveyor belt at a trash site
  • Authorities linked Estepp's death to the 2013 disappearances of Kianna Jackson, Josephine Vargas, and Martha Anaya in Santa Ana
  • Authorities said they continue to search for more potential victims
Two California men that are registered sex offenders have been arrested in connection to four murders across Orange County.
Franc Cano, 27, was arrested around 6pm on Friday in Anaheim. Steven Dean Gordon, 45, was arrested around 7pm, according to CBSLA.
Lt. Bob Dunn told the station that the investigation began on March 14, when police investigated a woman's body found at on a conveyor belt at Republic Waste Services.

Did Obama use cocaine at Occidental? You decide

We elected Barack Obama to the presidency without knowing a whole lot about the man as normally would know after the media has done the complete vetting they do of every other presidential candidate except this president. He hides or conceals just about everything about him that every other president has disclosed including his college grade, his medical records, and the kind of information most people put on their resumes.
But Obama did admit in his book that he used cocaine at times. Many questions have been raised about when and how often he's used cocaine since. Some wonder if he might still be using cocaine, or relapsing and using cocaine and other drugs even to this day.

U.S. ‘ghost town’ cleared out with Canadian money

DETROIT – It looks like a ghost town, and Canadian oil helped build it.
The burned-out, abandoned parcels of property in a west-end Detroit neighbourhood are the reverse image of an oil boom town — a ramshackle yin to the thriving yang of Fort McMurray, Alta.
For three-quarters of a century, crude oil has arrived here at the Marathon refinery. Even as this once-bustling, blue-collar area became blighted by crime and neglect like so much of Detroit, the industry survived.

So when neighbours started complaining about smells and occasional explosions while the plant was planning a US$2.2-billion expansion to handle the influx of Alberta-type heavy crude, basic economics proffered a solution.
The business expanded, and the people were paid to leave.
Picture a block the size of a football field, once crowded with old working-class homes. Then imagine it razed into empty lots of grass and dirt, with nothing left standing except for one home and a couple more abandoned houses slated for demolition.
Then imagine five- or six-dozen such fields. That’s what happened in Oakwood Heights.
The company offered an average of $65,000 a house in an area where the standard home is pegged at $16,000 and some properties can be had for less than $5,000. People jumped on the deal. Ninety per cent of the 100-acre area has been cleared, with 275 homes demolished and more demolitions scheduled for this year.
But not everyone took the money. Some refused for sentimental reasons, others for financial ones. For Mary McKenzie, it was both.
The retired school secretary has 19 grandkids. They gather here for holiday dinners, she says, reminiscing about one Christmas when they began decorating the house with an angel collection and lit statues.
She also did some math and figured the $64,000 being offered wouldn’t last very long. McKenzie concluded that once she repaid some credits for renovations, and the remaining mortgage, and the loan to add a new roof, porch and windows, she’d have lost the place with the memories without much to show for it.

President Assassination Attempts Exposed

There is constant threat to the President’s life, and according to recent reports, at any time, there are at least 1000 active threats against the Commander-in-Chief – of those 1,000, 400 are considered to be serious.  A book that has been recently released gives an inside look on some of the most notorious Presidential assassination attempts and details some of the lesser known ones too.
The book, “Hunting the President: Threats, Plots, and Assassination Attempts — from FDR to Obama,” written by Mel Ayton details the several assassination plots attempted by ordinary men in the past.  Although quite a few instances have been forgotten or deemed insignificant, the book details the outcomes that nearly could have gone drastically different.

Pressure mounts on UK over CIA’s ‘black site’ jail in Indian Ocean

A human rights group is urging Britain’s Foreign office to “come clean” over claims that a British-administered island in the Indian Ocean, Diego Garcia, was used as a secret "black site" detention center by the CIA.
“We need to know immediately whether ministers misled parliament over CIA torture on British soil,” Cori Crider, strategic director at Reprieve, a legal action charity group, said in a letter to UK Foreign Secretary William Hague.
“If the CIA operated a black site on Diego Garcia, then a string of official statements, from both this and the last government, were totally false,” Crider said.
The letter followed a report by the US Senate Intelligence Committee that Britain had allowed the US to run a “black site” prison on Diego Garcia to secretly hold suspects without accountability. The Diego Garcia prison held some “high-value” detainees and was operated with the “full cooperation” of the British government, US officials familiar with the Senate report said.
“Were ministers asleep at the wheel? Or, as the report suggests, have we been lied to for years?” Crider wrote.
Reprieve is also representing Abdel-Hakim Belhaj, a rebel military commander and opponent of the late Libyan leader, Mohamed Gaddafi, who was arrested in Malaysia and rendered to Libya, allegedly via Diego Garcia, in a joint US-UK intelligence operation.
“The Foreign Secretary must urgently clarify whether the CIA ran a secret prison on Diego Garcia, and whether our clients Abdel-Hakim Belhaj and his wife Fatima Boudchar were among its victims,” Crider said.
Belhaj became Tripoli's military commander in 2011, after the rebels took over the capital and ousted Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi. In 2004 Belhaj – the then-leader of the anti-Gaddafi Libyan Islamic Fighting Group – and his wife were detained by US intelligence officers at Bangkok airport, Thailand, when they were to fly to London to claim asylum.

Air Force predicts summer shutdown for powerful HAARP transmitter in Alask

FAIRBANKS -- The U.S. Air Force says time is running out on the High Frequency Active Auroral Research Program near Glennallen, the most powerful transmitter of its kind in the world.
“If no transition organization is identified, the Air Force plans to decommission the research site and initiate divestiture in June,” Air Force spokesman Ed Gulick said in an email.
Gulick said the Air Force Research Laboratory would like to see HAARP survive, but only if someone else pays the bills, estimated at about $5 million a year.
The White House Office of Science and Technology Policy organized a meeting Feb. 26 of federal agencies with an interest in ionospheric research, hoping to develop options to save HAARP. The 30-acre field of antennas, power plant and associated buildings is about 15 miles from Glennallen along the Tok Cutoff near Gakona.
Mixed signals emerged from that February session. At first, it appeared that research agencies might have two or three years to develop a business plan. But then the Air Force said it wanted to cut the power when a final research project wraps up next month.

Muslim Brotherhood Flees London After British PM Launches Investigation

The Muslim Brotherhood is reported to be fleeing its recently established headquarters in London following the announcement of an investigation into their activities by Prime Minister David Cameron.

A report in the Daily Mail makes mention of the fact in addition to former Prime Minister Tony Blair's foundation being linked to the Islamist group, the newly established London HQ of the group it set to be abandoned in favour of a base in Graz, Austria.
The Muslim Brotherhood's new international office in London, which was also reported to be serving as their new global headquarters after a brutal crackdown on the group in Egypt, was said to be above an old, disused kebab shop in the north-west London area of Cricklewood.
Earlier this month Prime Minister David Cameron announced that he was launching a formal investigation into the Brotherhood's activities in the United Kingdom – a situation that caused palpable stress to Brotherhood members in London. Some responded by threatening legal action against the British government, while other statements claimed that the group would work transparently to prove their non-violent motivations.
Many, including non-Brotherhood figures, have suggested that the investigation was launched under pressure by the government of Saudi Arabia, which Britain has recently negotiated sizeable weapons contracts with. The Saudi government itself banned the Muslim Brotherhood last month, and the lead investigator on Cameron's taskforce is the former UK Ambassador to Riyadh.
Now it appears that instead of working openly with the British government's investgation, the group has decided to flee yet another country following its downfall in Egypt. Graz is Austria's second largest city. The Global Muslim Brotherhood Watch website notes: "The choice of Graz as the location for a Muslim Brotherhood headquarters may seem odd to some but as a report on the history of the US Muslim Brotherhood has noted, self-described Brotherhood “Foreign Minister” Youssef Nada and the late US Muslim Brotherhood leader Ahmed Elkadi were both living in Graz in the 1960s. In addition, European Muslim Brotherhood leader Ayman Aly, formerly a top advisor to deposed Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi, had been a long-time resident of Graz."
