It's worth reminding Americans about Hassoun's story in light of President Obama's exploding Bowe Bergdahl scandal.
Ten years ago this month, U.S. Marine Wassef Ali Hassoun disappeared from Camp Fallujah in Iraq. After a five-month military investigation, he was charged with desertion and theft, brought back to Virginia’s Quantico Marine base, and then transferred to North Carolina’s Camp Lejeune for trial.
Yet, a full decade later, Hassoun is as free as a bird.
The accused deserter’s whereabouts are unknown. No trial ever began. No punishment ensued. And our leaders in Washington don’t seem to be doing a thing about this.
Hassoun was born in Lebanon and immigrated with his family to Utah in 1999. A few years later, he joined the Marines as an Arabic translator. On June 20, 2004, Hassoun bailed on guard duty at his base in Fallujah. He took his military-issued gun and his Muslim prayer rug. Military records obtained by the Salt Lake Tribune showed that he was “torn between military loyalty and his Muslim beliefs.”
According to the internal probe, he undermined intelligence-gathering operations by refusing to translate questions about Islam. He balked at raising his voice to suspected jihadi imams and sheiks. He openly threatened to “walk out the front gate and leave.”
The Muslim Marine told his colleagues he supported Hezbollah terrorist attacks on Israel. Members of his unit told investigators he was “anti-American” and listened to jihad sermons on propaganda CDs. Hassoun had received spiritual counseling from Navy Lt. Cmdr. Abuhena Saifulislam, a Muslim military chaplain tied to a radical Wahhabist outfit under federal investigation, according to Hoover Institution fellow and journalist Paul Sperry.
A bizarre video by Hassoun’s Islamist “kidnappers” showed him blindfolded with a sword above his head. But his fellow Marines suspected it was all staged–and the “abduction” a collaborative fake. Hassoun denied desertion charges, came back to the U.S. for trial, and then deserted a second time after failing to return to Camp Lejeune after visiting family in Utah. In 2011, Hassoun’s family sought a $1 million book and movie deal in Hollywood. One of his brothers said the fugitive Marine was with family in Lebanon.
Ten summers after he abandoned his post, double-deserting Hassoun is still on the run and has yet to be held accountable.
One of the commanders, Noorullah Noori, has plans to return to Afghanistan to resume fighting against the U.S., according to NBC News which spoke to another Taliban commander.
“After arriving in Qatar, Noorullah Noori kept insisting he would go to Afghanistan and fight American forces there,” the commander told NBC News.
Last Saturday, Obama announced the release of Mohammad Fazl, Mohammed Nabi, Khairullah Khairkhwa, Abdul Haq Wasiq and Noori in exchange for Bergdahl, who was captured by the Taliban in eastern Afghanistan after he disappeared from his Army platoon on June 30, 2009.
Some members of Congress blasted the deal, saying they feared that the five Taliban would take up where they left off in their fight against the U.S. Others think that the exchange was a bad deal for the U.S. given reports that Bergdahl deserted his unit.
Florida U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio called the exchange “very troubling,” and said that the deal “may endanger American lives.” Other lawmakers expressed similar reservations over the risk for future violence as well as Obama’s failure to notify them of the planned exchange.
Noori is a senior Taliban commander and an ex-governor of a northern Afghan province, where he was accused of taking part in the 1998 genocide of thousands of Shia muslims.
As part of the deal with the government of Qatar, the details of which have not been made public, Noori and his four compatriots are banned from traveling outside of the country for one year.
A high-ranking intelligence officer has come out and said that he believes that the Obama administration paid a ransom to the terrorist Haqqani network to have Bowe Bergdahl freed from their custody. Wow.
Earlier in the week, Oliver North echoed the same thing, but his statement was more speculation than substantive knowledge.
This anonymous intel officer has “intimate” knowledge of the process over the past few years to rescue Bergdahl, and he says that Obama’s story just doesn’t add up. Money had to have changed hands, he thinks.

But nobody has put it to the White House to say, ‘Was there anything in this for the Haqqanis? If so, what was it?’”

The State Department has repeatedly refused to say whether the deal that released Bergdahl involved any cash payment.This theory is based on an important distinction in the terrorist groups involved that much of the reporting on the situation has missed. Feinstein said White House deputy national security adviser Tony Blinken called her this week to apologize for not keeping her informed about the deal that returned Bergdahl to the U.S. and released five senior Taliban officials from Guantanamo Bay prison.Senator Feinstein is, generally speaking, not an ally of those who oppose the President and his agenda. However, credit must be given where it is due, and in this instance, as well as when it was discovered that the White House ordered the CIA to spy on Congress, Feinstein is on the right side.
The senator added that the administration has an “absolute obligation” to fully investigate the nature of Bergdahl’s capture. Some media reports have suggested that the solder was a deserter given that he likely voluntarily walked away from his platoon.
